In order to beat the riding prices on the real-estate market, Chinese government has decided to forbid purchase of real-estate properties in Shanghai to foreigners who are not married. This unusual and radical restriction was put into practice after 2011 laws that limited the possession of properties (maximum 2 par inhabitant). The goal of this maneuver? Bring a small relief to Shanghai market, a victim of bitter speculations.
This restriction concerns only the foreigners. And by foreigners, we have to understand anyone who is not a Shanghai local. To become one, living in the city for certain number of years is not enough. There are two very strict conditions:
- Having two parents from Shanghai
- Working in Shanghai for at least 7 years or being married to someone who lives in the city for at least 10 years
The foreigners represent 9 million persons (1 person in 2) who are excluded from the real-estate market. And this is even if the level of their revenue is more that sufficient.
The most surprising part of this decision in non-respecting the Chinese culture. In China, it is good manner if a man who wishes to propose to a young woman has his own apartment before the marriage (it is also better perceived by parents). A tradition deeply anchored in Shanghai mentality is today practically destroyed by the authorities.
Many see this as discrimination. Purchasing an apartt in Shanghai represents a big dream for many inhabitants who save money for many years before having enough to buy one. And today, the government says no.
And fake marriage licenses are becoming more common…
